SHING SHIRT

by

I made myself this sleeveless tee, but it didn’t fit. It so totally didn’t fit me that it fits Shing really well, and Shing is a tiny Asian woman.

Shing normally dresses in a pallette of gray and khaki, and she creates art in my spectrum of aqua, coral, and goldenrod. So fittingly, my clothing matches her imagination.

This shirt was made from all fabrics and remnants in my stash, and this lace triangle is just about my favorite:

Godspeed, pretty tank top. Enjoy your new life with someone who actually fits you.

WOLFIES at the pool

by

I’m deep in the glorious mess that is preparing for Burning Man (so many of you want fur suits this year!), so here’s a little project I did back in March. March was another time of extraordinary business, so sharing these outfits now is encouraging me in this current flurry of fabric.

Y’all know I sew outfits for my favorite glam synth band Story of the Running Wolf, but you don’t know how many outfits I’ve made. This particular wardrobe set was created for their DJ set at The Skybar at Hotel Mondrian in West Hollywood. Most of their outfits are black/silver based with neon details, created for their live shows at night. Since this was an outdoor daytime DJ set, we switched the color scheme to be mostly pink and blue, with gold accents.

This was such a fun party! I took my first Uber with half of the band, drank a ton of champagne in the fancy hotel room, bluffed my way into the party (of course I was on the list, but my companions were not), ate non-vegan pizza, didn’t get a sunburn, danced and jammed, took my second Uber, and was home by 9. I am a wild party animal!

I love sewing for these guys. Their style matches up with mine so wonderfully, and their input always intensifies the final product. I can’t wait to share some of the bigger projects we’ve worked on this year!

PROFESSIONAL PJs: scrappy summer camisoles

by

In any day, my schedule may include sewing at home, meeting with clients, and running errands on bike. What kind of outfit is appropriate and comfortable for all these activities? I’m developing ‘professional pajama’ style, for creative professionals who work from home. It’s going to be a movement!

The first entry into this bold new category of dress code is a camisole. I drafted the pattern and jumped right in with this sample. It was fun to make, and gave me lots of ideas for a second top, in terms of design and process.

The rayon drawstring pants are also part of this comfy fashion lifestyle.

I was so happy with the first top that I immediately made a second. I got more ambitious for the back, but unfortunately sewed the center back panels together along the wrong side. Since the jersey is so stretchy the design still works, but I was going for a neater fit. Next time!

Both versions are made mostly from scrap jerseys I’ve saved from other projects, and a few fabrics I have stashed away in my cabinet. Some of the seaming is structurally motivated, and some of it was designed for the small and odd-shaped scraps available. The cups are lined with a second layer of jersey, and I used 1/4″ elastic at the underbust seam to offer a bit of support.

Posting these tops together makes it easy to see the design evolution, and it makes me excited for what else this can become!

As always, thanks go to my husband for the photography.
