NEW NEON GAG MASKS

by

According to the Burning Man oracles, this is going to be one of the dustiest years on the playa!

This metallic purple one is definitely one of my favorites. I love how saturated the colors are!

Jason and I went out there for Fourth of Juplaya, and although it wasn’t very windy there were huge piles of fluffy dust all over the playa. And some amazing playa trails kicked up from fast cars!

It was hard to hold the blacklight and attempt clear photos. But you still get the idea of how bright they glow!

PINK LION COSTUME

by

I made this Pink Lion costume last summer for Burning Man 2011. Let’s just say it was quite a hit.

Pink Lion at the Sensatron

There was an entire night when he could only roar.

My good buddy approached me last summer and declared he wanted to be a lion for Burning Man. We found this amazing wolf-style faux fur, and it was love at first sight!

The pants and hood are both lined in white poly satin, cause I know how to make luxury. There is plastic boning in the ears so that they always stay perky. The sequin bowtie is sewn onto the zipper pull. The waistband has a D-ring tape on it, to clip little treasures onto. Unfortunately the weight of the fur was too much for the elastic waistband, so it quickly became apparent that gold suspenders would be necessary. And I’m so glad that they were!

Nestor is real!

He’s quite charming with that furry tail of his.

There was some fur left over, so I made him a cuddle puddle blanket, which he put to good use.

Perhaps the best part is that he’s a Thai massage therapist, and traded me amazing massages for the costume. Uh, yeah, it was awesome. Just wait till y’all see what I’ve made for him this year.

BOTTLE TIME

by

Jane is technically Jason’s cousin, but damnit, she’s my cousin too! This awesome lady is a professional bellydancer and part-time mermaid. I was just as excited as everyone else when she and her partner announced their pregnancy. It turned out to be pretty eventful, with weeks of bed-rest and a very earl arrival. I decided to make her a little gift to celebrate her post-pregnancy freedom with a bottle opener.

I got the cast-iron mermaid on Ebay and painted it to look like Jane. I’m so good at painting that Kekoa (the bebe) kept trying to stick it in his mouth. Despite his early arrival, he’s healthy and already making time with the ladies.

I used acrylic paints on top of a coat of Kilz, and coated the opener with several layers of spray sealant. Hopefully the paint won’t chip too much!
