SCRAPPY BIKINI

Y’all continue to sit patiently for some Burning Man photos. Just sit. Patiently.

In the meantime, here are two new pieces that I made last month. I wore them separately on the playa, but paired them into a swim suit for a trip to Laguna Beach last weekend.

Blake Gardner took this shots for me while my husband and our friend were scuba diving. I’m not sure why the waistband was all floppy right here. It stayed tight at Burning Man, and once I waded into the ocean it shrunk and didn’t stretch out again. That rhinestone button is actually Jason’s, but I thought he wouldn’t mind. So far there haven’t been any complaints.

I love how the diagonal stripes are radiating out from my waist. I designed the two pieces weeks apart, without consideration of each other, so that is a happy accident.

All the materials were scraps from my sewing cabinet, except for the lining on the shorts, which I bought to line my booty shorts. The patterns are my own, and I improvised the elaborations. At this point, I have this bikini, and top, leggings, and genie pants out of this same blue and green striped jersey. Am I missing anything?

CUSTOM LEGGINGS

This year I’ve been working on so many custom orders!

Local burner couple extraordinaire, Don and Kelly work and play together, and from what I can tell, always look awesome.

Normally I would crop these to make them look like they’re flying through space, but I love the shadows too much. So the illusion is spoiled!

I really have the greatest customers!

SLEEVELESS

I cut the sleeves off my Galaxy dress!

I have such a bad habit of cutting my sleeves and shoulders too tight! I like that slim look, but it makes the garment uncomfortable which makes it stay in my closet. Even though I knew that the sleeves weren’t working for me, I was reluctant to remove them. It meant admitting another failure, and there was no going back. But in reality, it was improving the fit of a great dress, like the ol’ caterpillar/butterfly scenario. Lately I’ve been focusing on identifying and removing roadblocks in my life, and small projects like this can really help with momentum for bigger changes.

The sleeves were nice, but maybe all that cotton candy tie dye was a little overwhelming. Since the neckline of the dress is high, it’s really great to have more skin exposed, and now this dress will be even more wearable.

I’ve enrolled in Craftsy’s Sew the Perfect Fit class, and eventually I will actually go through the lessons. This will be the first time in my life to have ever taken a formal-ish sewing lesson! Everything I know I picked up from my mom, and years of trial and error. Hopefully there will be properly fitted sleeves in my future! Of course, this will have to wait until after Burning Man. So many plans for September!
